Federal law requires that the rules for deciding who may vote be applied the same way to every person at the same polling place. Small differences, like a worker helping one voter find their street, are normal. A pattern of extra questions for some voters is worth writing down.

What the law actually says

The Civil Rights Act (52 U.S.C. § 10101) says officials must apply the same standards and procedures to everyone when deciding if a person may vote. It also says a person cannot be turned away for a small paperwork error that does not matter to their eligibility. Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act bans practices that deny or limit the vote because of race, color or membership in a language minority group.

What counts as an observation

Describe what you saw or heard, not what you think it meant. 'The worker told the voter ahead of me to come back later, and did not explain why' is an observation. 'The worker discriminated' is a conclusion.
